Cookery Lessons For Children

It’s never too early to start cooking! Getting hands-on and interactive is a great way for kids to develop a healthy relationship with food.

Sycamore Seeds after school cookery club is every term time Monday at Hornsey Vale Community Centre from 4pm - 5.30pm. Each week we make something delicious to take home whilst developing kitchen skills and learning fun food facts.

For the first time we’ll be running a longer Sycamore Seeds session for the Easter holidays. It will take place on April 11th and run from 10.30 - 14.30. We’ll be making traditional Easter treats to take home and a delicious lunch to share. Places are limited so make sure your little chefs are signed up in plenty of time.

I run the sessions with my teacher husband James. Primarily our focus is on fun and introducing children to the joys of the kitchen but we like to think we offer something that goes a bit further than the cupcakes-and-cookies of most kids cookery classes out there.

Sweet treats are dear to children's hearts and we won’t disappoint in that area but we’ll also be making bread, quiches, pasta, pies and other staples, with an unpatronising emphasis placed on enjoying fruit and vegetables.

Whilst our creations are in the oven we taste and discuss ingredients, do experiments or play games that broaden children’s understanding of what they eat.

We’ve been going for a term and a half now and among many other things we’ve baked cheesecake swirl brownies and made fresh ravioli. Activities included learning about cacao pods and having a chocolate tasting, doing experiments with eggs and playing with a custard-like substance called “oobleck” that sometimes behaves like a solid, and sometimes like a liquid!

Booking is now open for the March/April half term. The full list of sessions is below with tickets available from Eventbrite. There’s a discounted option for block booking or, if booking for more than one child, please use the code SEEDCAKE for a 20% discount.

Further Information

  • All children are welcome but classes are best suited to those aged 6-11. We encourage parents to drop and go as we find it leads to a more focussed experience for the children. There will be 10 places for each class and advance booking (by 2pm on the day of the class itself) is required so we can plan ingredients and equipment.

  • £20 per child, with a discount available for block booking or more than one child.

  • All ingredients are included as well as equipment and a recipe/fact sheet to keep. We provide aprons but advise that children wear clothes that can get a bit messy.

  • Please let us know when booking if your child requires a vegetarian option or has any allergies.

  • Both James and I are fully DBS checked and insured.

  • We reserve the right to alter the content of lessons depending on availability of ingredients etc.
